Thomas Mills letter, 1783.

This collection consists of a letter from Thomas Moullin [Mills] to his uncle, Nicholas Breton, who lived in Guernsey. Mills wrote the letter in 1783 from Savannah. It contains news of Mills, his wife and children, and asks after his siblings and other family members in Guernsey. He mentions financial hardships his store and plantation have faced, due in part to the Revolutionary War. Mills claims that British soldiers stole some of his slaves, cattle, and possessions, but that he still has his land and other goods and possessions. He mentions various people and goods. The letter is written in French; a transcription and a translation by Diana E. Adams Smith are included.

Thomas Mills (d. 1790) came to Georgia from the Island of Guernsey in 1757. By 1774 he was operating a store on the Bay of Savannah. In 1776 he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of a militia company in the Upper District of St. Matthews Parish. After the Revolution he became a large land owner. Mills was appointed a commissioner of the public market in 1782; he was appointed Harbor Master in 1785.
